BREAST HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. ACUPUNCTURE HELPS CONTROL NAUSEA FROM BREAST CANCER TREATMENT
A derivation of a Chinese medicine practice that originated 2,000 to 3,000 years ago may help women with breast cancer. According to a recent study, electroacupuncture, the application of electrical stimulation through traditional acupuncture needles, relieves nausea in breast cancer patients who undergo high-dose chemotherapy. While there is no scientific evidence that acupuncture should be used to treat breast cancer, this research suggests that it may be a useful complement to traditional medicine in helping to ease nausea caused by breast cancer treatment.

2. STUDY FINDS COMBINATION XELODA AND TAXOTERE MORE BENEFICIAL FOR ADVANCED BREAST CANCER PATIENTS THAN TAXOTERE ALONE
Two chemotherapy drugs, Xeloda (generic name, capecitabine) and Taxotere (generic name, docetaxel), have both been shown to be effective treatments for some women with advanced breast cancer. Now researchers have found that combining the two drugs helps women with advanced breast cancer live longer. The combination treatment also appears to help improve the time in which a tumor responds to therapy and helps slow tumor progression.

3. DOCTOR SAYS MICHELANGELO'S STATUE DEPICTS WOMAN WITH BREAST CANCER
Art historians have longed been puzzled about Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo’s depiction of women. Some historians have suggested that Michelangelo (1475-1564) was not interested in the female form or that he used male models to create sculptures of women. James L. Stark, MD, medical director of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Portsmouth, Virginia has another theory: that the subject for Michelangelo’s sculpture, "Night," had advanced breast cancer.

However, HRT is controversial because some studies have suggested that it may increase the risk for breast cancer. 5. OVERVIEW OF ALTERNATIVE/COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINES FOR CANCER PATIENTS
Alternative and complementary medicines have become increasingly popular in recent years. While anecdotal evidence reveals that many alternative or complementary medicines may be beneficial to patients, extensive research is still needed to determine whether non-traditional medicines are truly effective. That is not to say that complementary medicines are not viable options for some patients. When used in conjunction with traditional medicines, some complementary therapies may be very beneficial to the physical or psychological well-being of a patient. This article provides an overview of several different types of alternative and complementary medicines for cancer patients. An extensive list of online resources for alternative and complementary therapies is also provided.
