WOMEN'S HEALTH NEWS AND INFORMATION

1. DISCOUNTED MAMMOGRAMS OFFERED TO WOMEN ON NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY
Friday, October 19, 2001 has been designated National Mammography Day in the United States. On this day, more than 2,200 mammography facilities will offer discounted or free mammograms to help promote the importance of early breast cancer detection. Mammography, which involves taking special x-ray images of the breast, is currently the best exam to screen for breast cancer and detect the disease in early stages when the chances for successful treatment and survival are the greatest.

2. STUDY FINDS INCREASE IN OUTPATIENT MASTECTOMIES FOR BREAST CANCER
A newly published study found that more breast cancer patients are receiving mastectomies on an outpatient basis than in the past. During an outpatient mastectomy procedure, the patient leaves the facility after the breast is surgically removed and recovers at home instead of being admitted as an inpatient to a hospital. However, previous research has shown that women who have outpatient mastectomies tend to experience fewer side effects and are more satisfied with the procedure than patients who are admitted to the hospital after the surgery. Researchers found that geographical location and other factors, such as health insurance and additional medical conditions, are key in determining whether a woman undergoes a mastectomy as an inpatient or outpatient.

4. ANOTHER DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY SYSTEM RECEIVES FDA APPROVAL
A digital mammography system made by Fischer Imaging has received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help detect breast cancer. Previously, General Electric (GE) was the only company with an FDA-approved digital mammography system. Digital mammography uses essentially the same mammography system as conventional mammography, but the system is equipped with a digital receptor and a computer instead of a film cassette. Digital mammography has the potential to offer several advantages over standard film mammography, including faster image acquisition, improved contrast between dense and non-dense breast tissue, ability to correct under or over-exposure of mammography films, etc.
