I have been on Tamoxifen for 1 1/2 yrs.. 3 months after taking it, my very thick, very curly hair started to come out in hand fulls and the curl relaxed to a wave. It is now half as thick and no longer curly. The side affects say "hair loss uncommon"
Has anyone else experienced problems with their hair?

Nina,

I have previously undergone chemotherapy were I lost most of my hair. I also used Tamoxifen but I can't say that I've noticed significant hair loss due to the treatment.

Hi
I can relate to the hair loss, I too have had hair thinning. I asked my oncologist about this and she said that she has only heard of this happening only once. My hair is always falling out and it hasn't grown in 4 months since being on the drug. I guess I'll have short hair for another 5 years. Could be worse I guess.

Nina,
I had the same experience as you. Shortly after starting tamoxifen (3-4 months) my very thick hair started falling out in handfuls. When I put it in a ponytail the scrunchie was almost too loose to stay in. I told my oncologist about it but she didn't have any recommendations for me. I have been e-mailing another breast cancer survivor who has also noticed this condition. Well, good news! I found something that really works for this problem. It is made by Sundown & its a multi-supplement vitamin called "New Life Hair". You won't believe the difference. It started working right away. Now my hair isn't falling out at all any more. In fact, it is falling out less than before I started using tamoxifen. My 16 yr old daughter is also using it for hair breakage, & she has noticed healthier hair. I found it at my local drug store, Drug Emporium. The brand is fairly easy to find. I would definately recommend it. Please let me know if you do try it & have same results. Take care, Pam

Pam,
Thank you for replying. You made my night.
I can relate to the scrunchie thing. The same thing happened to me. My daughter who was 13 says, " mom, look how skinny your ponytail is." ooh that hurt. Then to add insult to injury, I had to go buy the little scrunchies! I will definitely go tomorrow to find New Life Hair. How many times a day do you take it?
I talked to my onco and he says he has had several patients complain about hair loss. But of course, in my opinion, the medical field doesn't find it important and therefore does not look for nor offer a solution.
I will let you know how it works for me.

Thanks again.
Nina

Nina:

I am about to start taking Tamoxifen and I did not read anything about hair loss. My hair is not the same as it used to be anyway because I am 56 and in menapause - my once beautiful thick hair is not not-so-thick and not as shiny as it once was. Thanks for the info on New Life Hair - i will get it today and start taking it now before I go on the drug. Hope you are doing well. Take care. Cathy
